St. Francis of Assisi.. the frier with stigmata

St. Francis, Fresco in Subiaco, Italy, 1228

This icon I had made in 2018. It represents the St. Francis as a 25 years old and before he got the stigmata.

St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most venerated saints in Christianity, a founder of the Franciscan order, man who had received a stigmata, and a mystic, who can communicate with the animals, birds and the environment.. He is known also for his attempt to convert the sultan of Egypt to Christianity. He is the first to arrange the Nativity scenes.

Patron saint of Italy and the city of San Francisco… Feast day 17 September.

As a young man St. Francis was quite rich and spoiled lad. But he renounced his previous life and dedicated himself to the simple life of poverty, and defined the rules for the monastic order he founded. Soon after the feast of Exaltation of the Cross in 1224, he was visited by a seraphim, who gave him the stigmata. He died by his sufferings 3 October 1226, singing Voce mea ad Dominum. 1228 pope Gregory IX declared him a saint, and laid the foundation stone at Assisi for the St. Francis basilica.

Generally, he is not considered a saint in Orthodox churches, because of the year 1054 Great Schisms between east and west Christianity. No matter, he is revered as a man of honor and true believer..

This icon now enlightens the hall of my GP, Domenico. I had an accident/ fell with the bycicle/ and he said that my wounds appear to him as I had gotten the stigmata..😇… But I hope he’ll recover me soon, for I’ll take a tour to St. Patrick island, Ireland..
